House Training Puppies is a site I designed to help people who are really struggling with getting their puppies potty trained. When I got my first puppy Emma (featured at the top right) I was so in love with her! I was more interested in playing with her, and hardly noticed or cared about a few puddles on the floor here and there. I was just in love with my new puppy! After a few months though, I realized it was time to get her potty trained. I had no idea that by not house training her, I had basically “trained” her that it was OK to go on the floor.

Crate Training Puppies – The Best Method For Quick Results

When House Training Puppies, crate training is the quickest way to get the job done. It works so well because when crate training puppies, it’s very simple to get a handle on your dog’s eating and toilet schedule, while making it very clear to your puppy where the toilet area is.

Some people have a hard time with the concept of crate training, and your puppy may whine a little bit being kept in the crate, especially if he is used to running free. However, dogs like having a den, and this creates a safe space for your puppy that he knows is his “home”. A puppy is very resistant to messing up his own space, and will hold off on relieving himself until he can get to another location-this is why crate training works.

The crate needs to be large enough so your puppy can comfortably walk around in a circle and then lie down. As he gets older, upgrade to a larger crate if necessary. Crate training puppies works basically because dogs want to avoid lying in their urine so they hold off on using the toilet when in the crate for as long as possible.

Throughout the day, keep track of the times each day your puppy drinks, eats and goes to the bathroom. Typically, toilet times tend to happen first thing in the morning, after playtime, 30 minutes after eating, and before bedtime. For younger puppies a few nighttime time trips may also be needed.

When you take your puppy out of the crate in the morning, take him right to his toilet area. Simply carry him straight there and set him down in the toilet area if he tends to get distracted or run off. You should just stand there for 10-15 or so minutes, simply watching and waiting. If he actually goes to the bathroom, immediately give your puppy lots of verbal praise and affection, and you can also give a treat. If he doesn’t go, then take him back to his crate, and in about 20 minutes or so, try again. Just repeat this pattern until successful, and once your puppy does go, reward the good behavior with playtime. You want to teach your dog that he needs to take care of business first, then he gets playtime. This sets up good habits.

In the initial stages, crate training puppies takes a lot of time and focus. If done right, you should see improvements quickly. Your puppy will need frequent breaks playing throughout the day, but for the most part he should stay in the crate during the early stages of the training process.

You must keep your eyes on your puppy at all times when he is out of the crate. If you see him about to go on the carpet, say no firmly and pick him up and immediately take him to the right area. This can be somewhat awkward, but it is really the only opportunity to help your puppy understand where his toilet area is.

When you are house training puppies, be patient and understanding, because accidents will happen. What you should do is quietly clean up the mess without letting your dog see, so you aren’t drawing any attention to it. Be sure and use a proper cleaning product to remove the urine smell. And remember, your puppy is just a baby and doesn’t know any better, so take the time to teach him what to do, and your patience will be rewarded!

Using Too Large a Crate – This is a common mistake made among new puppy owners that do not fully understand the concept of crate training. The purpose of the crate is not to punish your puppy, and despite what many pet owners may think, it is not cruel at all. When done correctly, the crate is a safe place for your puppy to relax in when he’s tired, and young puppies need lots of sleep.

The crate is meant to be only large enough for your dog to lay down and stand up and turn in a circle. You do not want any additional space, as that could become the toilet area, which you want to avoid. You want the crate small enough so your dog wants to avoid messing up his bed. Of course that means you need to give frequent opportunities to use the toilet, for small puppies at least every few hours until they learn to control their bladders a bit more. This means you’ll need to get up in the middle of the night if your puppy is very young. And of course you would not leave a puppy in a crate all day while you are at work.

The basic concept behind crate training is that your pup will hold it for as long as possible, and then when you bring him out of the crate, he’ll hopefully need to go potty, and there’s your opportunity to train him where to go. Pretty simple, right? When you are crate training puppies, it can be very effective when done right.

House Training Puppies – Consistency

Besides developing a schedule of eating and potty times for your puppy, consistency is very important. Whatever place you have chosen for the potty spot, that is the exact spot you should take your puppy to each and every time he might need to go. Initially, you might carry your puppy directly to that spot, so there is no opportunity to wander off or get distracted along the way.

When you have brought your puppy to the spot where you want him to go, you should use a phrase to reinforce what you want him to do, such as “go potty!” or “do your business!” or even ” hurry up!” You should be consistent in using that phrase each time you take your puppy out, and the puppy will begin associating that phrase as a command. You should say this phrase not only at the beginning, but while your dog is eliminating, so he understands what you mean. Immediately afterwards, praise!

Your puppy will learn by habit, and so if you are consistent in taking him to the proper location in the morning, after meals and before bed (more frequently for new puppies with little bladders) then you are giving him multiple opportunities throughout the day to learn the right place to go. If you do not keep to a schedule and be consistent, you will struggle for months to get your puppy house trained. It is as simple as that.

There is no quick fix, and you should expect to take at least a couple of days of fully focusing on your puppy’s potty routine. If your pup has been going on the floor for many months, it may take a bit longer to “undo” the bad habits he has learned. Do not be discouraged, take action now! Once you get started, the more consistent you are, the faster the process will be. Each time your pup goes to the toilet is a new opportunity to train him properly. So each day, you are presented with multiple opportunities. Once you have a few successes under your belt, your puppy will begin to understand how happy it make you when he goes to the toilet in this particular area.

Or maybe he has learned that he earns delicious treats only after this behavior, and that motivates him to go in the right location. I have found dried liver treats and cooked chicken bits work especially well for my dogs. Each dog is different and will have his own motivations, but the point is, after a few days of consistently going in the right spot, and receiving consistent rewards by means of praise, affection and possibly treats, your pup will begin to associate this as the correct course of action, and will become a habit.

It is important for new owners to allocate a period of time to house training. Puppies can be a lot of work initially, but the more time you spend with your new puppy in the beginning, the faster he will learn what is expected of him.Just remember that you will get out of it what you put into it.
