One of the key factors to success is praising your puppy when he does the right thing. This teaches him exactly what you want him to do, and he will work to earn your praise. When you first begin the process of house training puppies, select a phrase to use each time you take your pup to the toilet. Something along the lines of “do your business” will work well. Personally, I use “go potty!” but that’s because I have 2 adorable little Maltese girls. You need to watch for action and wait patiently. As soon as they have done the deed (and I mean THE MOMENT they are done) you should go wild with praise, applause, excitement. The puppy needs to be shown that you are over the moon about this behavior, as he wants to please you. The more excited you are, the more he will see he just did something really good, and now’s there’s a reward coming his way. The reward can be in the form of enthusiastic praise, affection and/or an especially tasty treat like a piece of cooked chicken or dried liver treats. Start with your praise, and then quickly follow up with the treat or affection, as they will lose the connection after a minute or so.
House training puppies can be a challenging process, and offering praise and rewards for good behavior will certainly speed up the process. Most dogs will start to get the hang of it pretty quickly and you may not need to resort to little bits of cooked chicken in your pockets, but if you have been making the effort at house training dogs for some time already, then go ahead and see if a delicious treat will be that extra bit of motivation your pup needs. Besides developing a schedule of eating and potty times for your puppy, consistency is very important. Whatever place you have chosen for the potty spot, that is the exact spot you should take your puppy to each and every time he might need to go. Initially, you might carry your puppy directly to that spot, so there is no opportunity to wander off or get distracted along the way.
When you have brought your puppy to the spot where you want him to go, you should use a phrase to reinforce what you want him to do, such as “go potty!” or “do your business!” or even ” hurry up!” You should be consistent in using that phrase each time you take your puppy out, and the puppy will begin associating that phrase as a command. You should say this phrase not only at the beginning, but while your dog is eliminating, so he understands what you mean. Immediately afterwards, praise!
Your puppy will learn by habit, and so if you are consistent in taking him to the proper location in the morning, after meals and before bed (more frequently for new puppies with little bladders) then you are giving him multiple opportunities throughout the day to learn the right place to go. If you do not keep to a schedule and be consistent, you will struggle for months to get your puppy house trained. It is as simple as that.
There is no quick fix, and you should expect to take at least a couple of days of fully focusing on your puppy’s potty routine. If your pup has been going on the floor for many months, it may take a bit longer to “undo” the bad habits he has learned. Do not be discouraged, take action now! Once you get started, the more consistent you are, the faster the process will be. Each time your pup goes to the toilet is a new opportunity to train him properly. So each day, you are presented with multiple opportunities. Once you have a few successes under your belt, your puppy will begin to understand how happy it make you when he goes to the toilet in this particular area.
Or maybe he has learned that he earns delicious treats only after this behavior, and that motivates him to go in the right location. I have found dried liver treats and cooked chicken bits work especially well for my dogs. Each dog is different and will have his own motivations, but the point is, after a few days of consistently going in the right spot, and receiving consistent rewards by means of praise, affection and possibly treats, your pup will begin to associate this as the correct course of action, and will become a habit.

Consistency is very important to properly house train your puppy, and learning his schedule will aid in the process immensely. Understanding when your puppy needs to go is critical to the process. Typically puppies need to go potty when they first wake up, about 20-30 minutes after they eat or drink, after walking or play, and just before bedtime.

It is important for new owners to allocate a period of time to house training. Puppies can be a lot of work initially, but the more time you spend with your new puppy in the beginning, the faster he will learn what is expected of him.Just remember that you will get out of it what you put into it.
Ideally, you would begin the training on the very first day your puppy comes home. The reason is because every time your puppy goes potty, he is learning a new habit. If he is going anywhere he happens to be in the house, then he is learning that he should just go wherever. Each time this happens, that lesson is reinforced. Before you get started with house training puppies, you will need to determine if an indoor or outdoor method is preferred for your home. Indoors can work for small breeds such as Maltese and Chihuahua. The advantages to an indoor potty are that you do not need to take the pups outside late at night, and it may be convenient for you and your puppy to use an indoor potty. However, there are disadvantages to an indoor potty that you need to consider before choosing what is best for your situation. First is the location of the indoor potty area within your home. When the area is soiled, it will not look or smell pleasant. It can be difficult to choose a spot within the home that is discreet enough and away from view, but also easy for your puppy to get to when nature calls. If you have a large home or multi level home, it may not be possible for your puppy to get to the right spot on his own. Puppy training pads are available as washable or disposable, depending on your preference. The soiled washable puppy training pads need to be kept somewhere where the odor is contained. The disposable ones make cleanup easier, but some puppies will shred them into a million pieces, so depending on your individual puppy, one type may work better than the other.
Outdoors tend to be the preferred method for most people. If you live in an area with inclimate weather, your puppy may be averse to going outside in the rain or snow. Another consideration is that if you are not at home during the day, your puppy may not be able to hold his bladder for 8-9 hours initially, and you will need to keep your puppy to a confined space such as a bathroom while you are away, to minimize the mess. In general, people find that dogs naturally tend to want to go outside, so house training dogs to go outside can be the easiest route to take.
Whichever method you choose for house training, dogs have their own individual personalities and some will prefer one option while another dog shows a different preference.
